Guest Review of the Riviera Hotel Vancouver
Sept 12, 2009
The Riviera Hotel is in a cluster of budget hotels at the end of the renowned shopping on Robson Street. It is very well sited.

The Riviera is a fairly small hotel, having 11 floors of rooms. Each floor has 4 rooms, each comprising a corner. You have an expansive view in one direction, and in the other a smaller view accompanied by a balcony off the living area. The top floor has two "penthouse" rooms. These have no more floor space than the others, but have an enlarged living area at the expense of the kitchens of the other two models. They are a little higher priced. Both have a microwave but only the more expensive has a fridge. I viewed these and would not recommend either.

On the fifth floor and below, each room, which is quite large (1/4 of the floor), has 2 double beds. There is no couch and no separate bedroom. The kitchens are quite nice, having a range/oven, good-size fridge, microwave, toaster, electric tea kettle, plates, mugs, and flatware. Each unit has a small dining table with 4 seats. Each sitting area has a couple of small arm chairs.

I would recommend for most travellers the rooms on the 6th to the 10th floors, which have very nice views, better on the side facing northeast towards Burrard Inlet and North Vancouver, away from Robson Street (with room numbers ending in 3 or 4). These rooms have a separate bedroom with a double bed and a large mirrored closet. Iron and ironing board are inside. In the hallway entering the living room there are two smaller mirrored full length closets for hanging clothes. With the desk in the living room there are storage drawers. The bedroom has a dresser for storage and end tables on both sides of the bed. The living room contains a couch, a table in front of it, two upholstered chairs with a table between them, and in the corner next to the kitchen a small dining table with 4 chairs. The kitchens are as described above. The suite was clean and tastefully furnished. The oriental-style throw rug in the living area adds a note of ambience.

The room was quite clean, if you ignore a few slightly discolored areas of the rug. Our kitchen had one countertop with a few dings in it, but other than that the condition of the room was very good. The staff was quite pleasant. I would venture to say that for the cost of the room, the Riviera offers an exceptional deal. At this time I would say this is the best choice of a budget hotel if you want to stay in the downtown Vancouver area.

The Riviera is another of Robson St's many converted apartment buildings Rooms are cheaply furnished, but have full kitchens, balconies, decent views, guest laundry and free parking.

In the cut-throat contest between the suite hotels occupying this area, the friendly Riviera wins in at least one category: it's the only one with balconies, some of which look out over the North Shore mountains . Inside, the property has a bright and breezy lobby leading to a tiny, ultra-slow elevator that operates to its own schedule. The rooms (some of them surprisingly spacious) include full-size fridges and stoves, so you can go crazy shopping for local delicacies at the two nearby supermarkets.

After a lot of research for hotels in Vancouver I selected the Riviera. The Hotel was as I expected. It is somewhat dated and could stand with a facelift, but it was clean and very acceptable. The rooms we had were both 1 bedroom suites with a kitchen and separate bedroom. The kitchens were adequately equipped and the bedrooms were large. I did not find the front desk staff to be terribly friendly but they were helpful and courteous. We had asked for and received rooms on the top floors and they were north facing as requested (view of the north side mountains). Location was great, on the western end of Robson, near Stanley Park and only a 25 minute walk to Gastown or 15 minutes to Granville Island. Only real draw back is that the rooms do Not have any control over the heat. The rooms were quite warm and there were not any thermostats in the rooms. Only option is to open windows or patio door to balcony, but that can be noisy. All in all, I would recommend this location.

Stayed here in early Mar after recommendations from a friend who lives in Vancouver and was very impressed with it.
It's in an excellent location on Robson Street, the centre of Vancouver is around a 10 minute walk away, as is the beach. It's also opposite a bus-stop for the Airporter service to Vancouver airport.
The room(s) were spacious and clean, with a good kitchen and dining area - although you are so close to so many great-value restaurants in Denman Street. There is also free car-parking.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful and it all contributed to an enjoyable stay.
The only minor quibble could be the lack of air-con in the rooms. Having a window open could be noisy, so try and get on as high a floor as possible and not facing onto Robson, but other than that it is thoroughly recommended.
