You can walk directly from the spacious breakfast room to the SkyTrain heading to downtown Vancouver without ever going out in the rain.
Location: You can access dozens (hundreds?) of stores and restaurants in the adjoining Metropolis mall. That includes a drug store, grocery store, huge food court, and much more.
Location: There's a movie complex 100 feet from the side door, and plenty of free covered parking for hotel guests.

There were drawbacks. The rooms felt a bit old, and the noise from the passing trains was a minor distraction at night. It's a little pricy, but not much more than other Vancouver-area hotels.

The room was clean. The ice machine was broken when we checked in but fixed before we left. The breakfast area included meat, eggs, and a nice variety of healthy and non-healthy alternatives. There was a small outdoor heated pool and a small exercise area. The TV was a nice HD set with over 40 US and Canadian channels plus PPV movies. Free wireless internet.

I would be happy to return here on my next trip to Vancouver. It's really convenient, even if it might not be a real bargain.

We stayed at this hotel several years ago and remember it as having small rooms, a not so great restaurant, and in need of a little upgrading. Well, the good news is that the property has definitely been upgraded fairly recently, and for just $15 more a night we chose to stay in a 2 queen bed room on the executive floor rather than a standard double bed room. It was worth it for sure! If you are travelling with kids (especially older ones), it is probably going to be worth your while to spend that extra money to get more space and comfort.
The breakfast was impressive and really beats the old restaurant. There's lots of places to eat in the mall anyway.
The only downsides I can think of is the pool is somewhat run down and there is no hot tub...or sauna (that we could find anyway!). The room was also not as clean as I would have liked and there were a couple things in the bathroom that needed minor repairs (curtain rod, door). I am sure they would have had someone fix them, but we didn't really want to be bothered. Those are really things that should be kept up anyway.
Obviously if you want to explore downtown Vancouver, this place is a little out of the way, though there is a skytrain station right there, so you can always get around that way. All in all this is a decent and affordable place suitable for families.

First off, I really want to like this hotel. It is clean and comfortable and well-situated. In fact this was my second stay having been there for a few nights last year (my son is at school in the area)

So those are the good things - very clean, very comfortable, apparently friendly and helpful staff.

After I had checked in on this stay (one night, Advance Purchase rate) and signed all the papers and gone up to my room I received a call from the receptionist saying that my advance purchase rate hadn't been processed and that I would have to pay $30 more for that night. I informed her that I had not been notified of that and as far as I was concerned the rate should be the same. We quibbled back and forth for a while and eventually after I offered to check out and find another hotel she graciously agreed to honor the original rate. Fabulous. What an privilege.

When I got home the next day I checked that i had not been contacted either by phone or email by HIE to tell me that there was a problem with my booking.

Much as I like this hotel, this little incident really annoyed me and I am not sure I would book there again. Sad.

A lot of positives re. this hotel and a few negatives.
Firstly it is in a great location, close to Skytrain and shopping. The hotel itself is well maintained though out and check in and out easy. The breakfasts were good with decent space to get a seat. The outdoor swimming pool was good and clean.
However, two very basic complaints. The quality of the breakfast cutlery was by far the poorest I have come across in chain hotels. The other complaint is the poor equipment in the fitness suite which is well below average.

We just got back after spending 3 nights at the Holiday Inn Burnaby. I had read all the reviews before booking at this hotel & it lived up to the previous postings. It was clean & quiet, the staff were great, and the room was very nice. There is a complimentary, hot breakfast every day - standard to Holiday Inn Express. If I had one compliant it would be the noisy heating/cooling fan in the room at night - had to just turn it off while sleeping. Considering all other factors related to this hotel, that seems like such a minor thing to point out. The hotel is right on the SkyTrain metro line & is part of the Metropolis Mall complex (largest mall in the Vancouver area). Having said that, though, we could not hear anything related to transit, traffic, or people coming & going to the mall, while inside the hotel or our room. There was a nice fitness centre (not large, but good enough), and an outdoor heated pool. There are several restaurants right close to the hotel (inside & outside of mall spaces). Picking the Holiday Inn Express Burnaby was a great choice for us!

The Burnaby Holiday Inn Express is a little bit hard to find as it sits back away from the main road Kingsway or route 99. After finding the hotel everything is just right. You park underneath the hotel in a well lite parking garage for free. The front desk is professional and quick to get you signed in and on your way.

The king bed room I was given on the 6th floor was clean, quiet and just right for my business travel visit. The wireless internet allowed me quick access to my VPN connection and other internet services that I needed during my stay.

The hotel is part of a shopping mall, with easy walking access to shops and a wide variety of dining options. Across the street from the hotel is rapid rail transportation downtown. Exploring Downtown Vancouver is much easier with the worries of where to put the car. Using the train is easy and safe.
